An elective single point of access (SPoA) is a model that NHS providers must implement to create a consolidated route for all specialist advice, opinion requests and referrals into secondary care services.
By using a single point of entry into providers (through eRS), reinforced by decision-support tools and defined clinical pathways, the SPoA ensures patients are directed to the right care first time, without unnecessary delays, duplication or referral rejections.
To cut down patient wait times and meet referral to treatment (RTT) targets most effectively, SPoA can help prevent bottlenecks by ensuring that only patients who genuinely require specialist input progress through to secondary care, with patients who can be managed elsewhere redirected to the most appropriate pathway.
Over 80% of patients on the elective waitlist are currently waiting for outpatient appointments, diagnostic tests or clinical decisions, with around 15% of patients with a decision to admit (DTA) or awaiting treatment.
That means a significant proportion of patients are currently being handled within processes or managed in secondary care that, could instead be handled by a SPoA designed to get patients to the diagnosis and clinical decision stage faster.
By actively managing that patient journey from referral to clinical decision with a straight to diagnostic approach and facilitating collaborative clinical decision making to act on that information efficiently, the SPoA can become a digitally enabled operational and clinical co-ordination layer sitting between care settings.
With Bleepa®, GPs can refer patients into defined, symptom-based pathways via eRS.
Pathway co-ordinators can manage referrals from a single dashboard, giving them clear end-to-end visibility of every patient pathway.
Rule-based tagging helps teams organise patient lists, identify where each patient is in their journey, and highlight urgent or at-risk cases against defined targets, with breach alerts in place to ensure patient safety.
Bleepa integrates with e-RS to support more streamlined workflows and brings specialist advice, referral triage, diagnostic imaging and results into one place. This gives clinicians the information they need to review referrals efficiently and make faster, more informed decisions.
Because discussions can take place remotely and asynchronously, Bleepa also supports flexible pathway management across regions and services, helping teams collaborate in a way that reflects local needs.
Bleepa helps teams track and manage elective pathways more effectively by giving them clearer visibility of referrals, performance and patient progress. With referral activity, DM01 and RTT performance tracking in one place, teams can identify delays earlier, reduce inappropriate referrals and support faster RTT recovery.
By supporting faster, more informed clinical decision-making and better coordination across services, Bleepa can help reduce unnecessary outpatient attendances and improve productivity across elective and outpatient teams.
