What is elective single point of access?
An elective single point of access (SPoA) is a model that NHS providers must implement to create a consolidated route for all specialist advice, opinion requests and referrals into secondary care services.
By using a single point of entry into providers (through eRS), reinforced by decision-support tools and defined clinical pathways, the SPoA ensures patients are directed to the right care first time, without unnecessary delays, duplication or referral rejections.
Breaking referral to treatment bottlenecks
To cut down patient wait times and meet referral to treatment (RTT) targets most effectively, SPoA can help prevent bottlenecks by ensuring that only patients who genuinely require specialist input progress through to secondary care, with patients who can be managed elsewhere redirected to the most appropriate pathway.
Over 80% of patients on the elective waitlist are currently waiting for outpatient appointments, diagnostic tests or clinical decisions, with around 15% of patients with a decision to admit (DTA) or awaiting treatment.
That means a significant proportion of patients are currently being handled within processes or managed in secondary care that, could instead be handled by a SPoA designed to get patients to the diagnosis and clinical decision stage faster.
